Rowing is grace, team effort, strength of body, strength of spirit, mental discipline, non-violent competition and respect for the environment. Gainesville Area Rowing (GAR) is committed to providing the benefits of rowing to all youth in Alachua County. GAR teaches physical fitness, nutrition, and psychological skills that lead rowers to heightened mental and physical self-awareness.

Since its inception, GAR, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation, has been solely funded by rower dues, fund raising activities, and donations from outside sources. GAR does not receive support from any school or from the School Board of Alachua County.

Since GAR’s inception, more than 25 of its boats have earned medals at Florida Scholastic Rowing Association Championship Regattas. Six of these boats have won gold and have gone on to represent GAR at the USA Youth National Rowing Championships in Cincinnati. Of these boats, two have won medals. These accomplishments are even more impressive given that over 40 teams compete at States, many twice the size of GAR.

Currently, more than 20 GAR alumni are rowing in college. Six of these are receiving either full or partial scholarship assistance as a consequence of their rowing. GAR alumni have gone on to row for: Boston College, Georgia Tech, Northeastern, Rollins College, Rutgers, Syracuse University, U.S. Naval Academy, University of Central Florida, University of Iowa, University of North Carolina, University of Pennsylvania, University of Rhode Island, University of Texas, Williams College, and Yale University.

So Many Ways You Can Make a Difference
GAR is proud to offer three ways you can contribute to its mission of providing all the benefits of rowing to as many Alachua County youth as possible.

Become a Rowing Angel
Some families are not in a position to pay GAR dues. GAR has developed the Rowing Angels program whereby economically challenged rowers are sponsored through the generosity of others. Click here for details.

Sponsor a GAR Regatta
These exciting events offer numerous possibilities to promote your business to a captive audience of rowers and their parents. Click here for details.

Provide Much-Needed Equipment
Racing shells are expensive and wear and tear and technological improvements mean GAR is constantly in need of new equipment. Click here for details.
